Bridgekeeper: “What… is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?”
King Arthur: “What do you mean? An African or European swallow?”
Bridgekeeper: “Huh? I… I don’t know that! AUGH!!!”

So, I don’t know about other knitters knitting the Evelyn Clark’s Swallowtail shawl, but I ran into some serious problems with the “Budding Lace” repeat…mainly having one stitch too few or too many. Then, it might just me – this was my first shawl! But it came out great, if I say so myself (check it out on my Ravelry page – minervas-hand).
ANYWAY! I found that it really helped for me to check my number of stitches after each row of the “Budding Lace” repeat, so I created a little chart for those of us who might need to micro-manage our stitches. You can download it here: “Swallowtail Mileage Sheet.”
Let me know if you find this helpful, too! Happy knitting!
Thank you for this mileage sheet! I’m knitting this right now, and it will come in handy.
This mileage sheet has been a lifesaver! Thank you so much for this. Without it, my shawl would be a tangled, tearstained mass of frayed wool…
Thank you for working this out, I hope it will help me before I go insane!
Thanks for sharing. I hope to cast on today and expect this will be very helpful.
Thanks. I have finished this part of the scarf, but think I’ll do it again, and I’m tucking this chart in with the pattern.
Thank you thank you thank you. This will help a lot. That and strategically placed life lines.
Many thanks for putting this together and leaving a comment on Ravelry. I just started my Swallowtail and spent all weekend thinking I needed something just like this to help me keep track of things!
Thank you for this chart–I am knitting my first one and hvae a lot of trouble figuring out the repeats.
THANK YOU!
I thought I was losing my mind!
You’re wonderful to work this out and then share it. I knitted-tinked-knitted-tinked-knitted-tinked and kept coming up one short stitch like others have mentioned. Thought it was just me. I’m not a new knitter but new to lace. I’m restarting with new courage.
